Becoming the Change

As you can probably tell from some of the posts,  I have been taken aback by what has happened in America starting with the election.  Hate crimes and speech seem to be at an all-time high.  A picture by a social media celebrity was posted in which she and a white supremacist group were doing the heil Hitler salute.  The KKK held a public celebration of the election results.  I have heard that other world leaders have picked up on the anti-immigrant rhetoric and are using it to whip up their own electorate.  What is happening???

I can’t solve the world’s problems, but I can do something.  A small group leader from my church once told me, “Don’t do nothing because you can’t do everything.”  I believe in that 100%.

If you’re looking for your life’s purpose prior to marriage, now is the time.  If you’re wondering what the Lord is calling you to do while you are single, I can tell you that He is calling you to reach out to a broken world.  Not later, now!  Not someone else, you!

So what am I going to do?  At first, I didn’t know what to do – and I’m still don’t know fully – so the things that I started with are easy and completely manageable.

  1. Support immigrant/Muslim businesses

People come to this country for the economic opportunities.  So much of the hate-filled rhetoric has been directed towards immigrants and particularly Muslims.  So I cannot think of anything better than to put my money where my mouth is and support those businesses.  My friend and I were looking for a place to have dinner and we specifically chose to eat at a Muslim restaurant – not only was it delicious, it made me feel good to be a part of demonstrating that I support immigrants in America.

2. Be willing to say it loud and proud

I think that we all need to do more to make clear to everyone that we are a place of inclusivity and diversity.  I am in the process of buying some yard signs that say in multiple languages (Spanish, English, and Arabic) “Wherever you are from, you are my neighbor.”  That is such a powerful message.  I want people to know where I stand.  So whether it is a street sign, a T-shirt, a large safety pin (if you are not aware of the safety pin movement, google it), find a way to say it loud and proud what you stand for.

3.  Reach out to your neighbors

The Great Commission is to preach the gospel to all nations – in today’s world, we often do not even have to leave our neighborhoods to do that!  I am fortunate to live in a very diverse neighborhood.  I have put out on social media for our neighborhood (Nextdoor) that I want to host a neighborhood potluck.  I plan to do it in January.  I don’t know who will show up – maybe no one!  It is scary to put yourself out there and to invite in whomever.  But I am going to open my home to do it because I think it is that important that we come together as a community.

These are just a few ways – I know there are more!  We need to confront the forces of hate and darkness that are currently in the world.  Don’t wait for a cape and a magic wand to appear – you can do it today, you can do it now.  It doesn’t have to be in big ways.  If we all did a little, we will change the world.

What are other ideas of things that you can do to be a part of changing the world?
